Tokyo Post Office


Tokyo Post Office is a representation of the existing Japanese postal system. The Japanese Postal System is run by the Japan Post Service Company Limited. This Tokyo Postal Service was set up in October 2007 under the Japan Post Network Act. The sole shareholder of this corporation is Japan Post Holdings Company Limited.

The establishment of this organization consists of 13 regional offices, 70 chief offices, 1023 offices, 2560 distribution centers, 1 International Mail operation center with 1 distribution center, 4 mail handling centers, and 1 customer support center.

Tokyo Post Office Services

Post Offices in Tokyo perform multiple functions, which include: Standard mail, International Mail, EMS, Parcels, Track and Trace Service, Postal Stamps.
  • Standard Mail - Standard domestic mail can broadly be categorized into 'letter type' and 'parcel type'. Letter type can be further divided into four classes - 1st class for sending business documents and envelopes, 2nd class for sending postcards, 3rd class for sending newspapers, magazines and periodicals, and 4th class for sending educational matter. 3rd and 4th class letters are charged comparatively lower. Under 'parcel type' articles less than
    3 kg can be sent by booklet parcel post, and articles upto 20 kg may be sent by ordinary parcel post.
  • International Mail – International mail is a specialized division of Tokyo Post Offices. Separate mail services are available for sending envelopes, greetings cards, postcards, small packets, parcels, special mailbags, printed matter, addressee payable postage, and literature for the blind. The rates vary according to the mail type and destination country.
  • Parcels – Specialized parcel service, or 'you-pack' service for sending items within Japan is offered by post offices in Tokyo. Different services for sending frozen goods, refrigerated goods, and ski/golf accessories are available. 'You-pack for Airport' service offered by Tokyo post offices send the customer's luggage to the airport.
  • EMS – Express Mail Service is offered for international mail weighing up to 30 kg to be delivered to any 120 overseas countries. All material booked under EMS are treated on top priority basis. To trace the exact location of the booked item Tokyo post offices have introduced the 'Track and Trace' service, which allows the consignor to exactly locate his material till delivery is affected.
A Tokyo Post Office remains open from 8 am to 10 pm on weekdays, and from 9 am to 10 pm on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
