National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo



National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo was founded in 1952 in Kyobashi. It shifted to Kitanomaru Park in 1962. The new building of Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art was designed by master architect Taniguchi Yoshiro.

The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo has a collection of Japanese artists since the Meiji period. This Tokyo museum houses the Crafts Gallery, the Art Museum, and the National Film Center.

The Crafts Gallery was designed by a military engineer Yasushi Tamura in 1910. It was originally the headquarters of the Imperial Guards, which was abandoned after the second world war. In 1972 this building was officially made an extension of Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. Thereafter it has become an important cultural landmark.

By 1977 the renovation work was complete and the building was opened as the National Museum of Modern Art, Crafts Gallery. The Crafts Gallery has an enviable collection of artifacts made of textiles, glass, ceramic, bamboo, lacquer, and metal. There are exhibits of dolls and graphic designs. Traditional
crafts work are also on display.

Special thematic exhibitions are held throughout the year to attract visitors to this amazing Crafts Gallery.

The Art Museum has a permanent exhibition titled 'Modern Japanese Art from the Museum Collection'. It is a display of drawings, paintings, water colors, photographs, prints, and sculptures belonging to the 20th and current centuries.

The National Film Center is dedicated to research and preservation of Japanese and international cinema. Being a member of Federation Internationale des Archives du Film it works towards collection, preservations, and restoration of film and non-film material. Books, journals, and periodicals relating to films are maintained and lent out from their library. The National Film Center in association with the Agency for Cultural Affairs selects films that can be shown publicly.

The National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo is located in Kitanomaru-koen, Chiyoda-ku. It remains open from 10am to 5pm and till 8pm on Fridays. Mondays are closed.
