The Tokyo Metropolitan Government supervises the administration of the 23 special local public entities. Tokyo is politically sub divided into several geographical areas or local public entities for administrative convenience. The Metropolitan Government operates through special ward system.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government offers several services to the citizens of Tokyo. Some of the important services provided by the Metropolitan Government of Tokyo are:
- Supervisory Role- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government looks after the drainage system, water supply and fire safety of the 23 special local public entities
- Imposition of Taxes- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government imposes municipal taxes on the common population of Tokyo. Some of the important taxes collected by the Metropolitan Government of Tokyo are Fixed Assets Taxes and Residents’ Taxes
- Budgetary Planning for the 23 local public entities- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government prepares a budget for proper development of

the areas.
The Metropolitan Government disburses the taxes to the special wards for further developmental works
- Administrative Functions- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has distributed and assigned several administrative functions to the special wards. After the enforcement of the new ward system on the 1st of April in 2000, the wards have been given more financial autonomy to carry out different functions

- No.1 Tokyo Metropolitan Main Building
- No.2 Tokyo Metropolitan Main Building
- Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Building
The office remains open from Monday to Friday from 9:30 A.M to 12:00 P.M and 1:00 A.M to 5:00 P.M, for general public.
