Founded in the year of 1943, the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly is the legislative wing of Tokyo Government. The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly is an autonomous body that plays a pivotal role in implementing important administrative decisions for the welfare of the general population.
The organizational structure of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly includes the Assemblymen, Political Parties and the President and the Vice President. The members of the Metropolitan Assembly are elected by the process of adult franchise through general elections. The President and the Vice President are selected by the members of the Assembly from amongst themselves. The President of the Assembly represents the Metropolitan Assembly in case of meetings with other government and non-government organizations. The President maintains discipline in the Assembly.
The political parties are also referred to as Affiliations in the Tokyo government. The members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly represent the opinions of their respective affiliations in the Assembly. The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly is empowered with several powers and responsibilities.

- Investigation of certain policies of the Tokyo Government
- Selection of the Election Committee Members and Assembly Officers
- Propose a no confidence vote against the Governor
The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly organizes regular sessions, extraordinary sessions, plenary sessions and committees to supervise the functioning of the government. The Regular sessions of the Assembly occur in the months of February, September, June and December for a continuous period of thirty days. The extraordinary sessions are special sessions that are summoned on the request of the members of the Assembly. The Plenary Sessions are those meetings where all the members of the Assembly are present.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly works democratically and implements various laws for the well being of the common mass.
