Hamarikyu Gardens, Tokyo




Hamarikyu Gardens is one of the popular Tokyo attractions. This public park is located near Sumida River that runs in the Chuo-ku district and is 300 years old. During the 17th century, the garden was a place of retreat for the Shogun Tokugawa family.
The Royal family took the possession of the land in 1871. Sophisticated and high-class visitors were entertained in this beautiful location during the Edo period. It was opened to the public on 1st April in 1946.

The garden spreads over an area of about 250,165 square meters. It is surrounded with the waters of Tokyo Bay on three of its sides. This surrounding moat is widely known by the name of Shioiri Pond. Hamarikyu Garden features another pond, a home for migratory birds, herons and ducks, an old pine tree, teahouses, other pine trees lining the promenade and the beautiful pavilions. Every season, the plum trees, peony garden and the cosmos field are filled with blossoms that enhance the beauty and charm of the place.

The visitors can enjoy and participate in different activities like Japanese Goshawk hunting techniques and Falcon exhibitions that are held near the garden. The tourists visiting this wonderful location can sip a cup of tea at the tea stall in Nakashima, which is situated in the center of the pond. The shop also sells Japanese sweets and macha to the guests.

To reach Hamarikyu Gardens, tourists will have to walk only 10 to 15 minutes from JR Shimbashi Station. They can also avail the Oedo subway line and the Yurikamome train. Besides, another option for the travelers is to sail from Odaiba and Asakusa. The garden is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm.
