The Governor occupies an important position in the Metropolitan Movernment of Tokyo. Elected by the common mass of Tokyo, the Governor of Tokyo Metropolitan Government acts as the head of Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The Governor and the Metropolitan Assembly supervises the administrative works of the Tokyo Government. The Governor of Tokyo is also responsible for presenting the annual budget to the Assembly.
In case of any difference of opinions between the Governor and the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on a particular issue, a vote of no-confidence is passed against the Governor by the members of the Assembly. Under such adverse political circumstances, the Governor is required to dissolve the Assembly within a period of ten days.
The Governor of Tokyo is responsible for submitting a comprehensive report on the over-all functioning of the Assembly to the Metropolitan Assembly for audit

and inspection. Among other responsibilities, the Governor is entrusted with the power to summon the members for an important meeting of the Assembly. About one-fourth of the members of the Assembly can also request for an extraordinary session to the Governor.
Presently, Shintaro Ishihara is the Governor of Tokyo. Apart from being a prominent administrative figure, he is also known as a well-known author. In the year 1999, he was appointed as the Tokyo Governor. He belongs to the Liberal Democratic Party.
Some of the remarkable policies that this great personality implemented for the sake of public interest include reducing expenditure on metropolitan spending projects. He also introduced a new type of tax upon the gross profit of the banks. Shintaro Ishihara has also proposed the opening of a casino in the district of Odaiba. Governor of Tokyo Metropolitan Government has also played a major role in strengthening the foreign relations.
