Gishi Sai


Gishi Sai is one of the best loved events of Tokyo. Gishi Sai in Tokyo is celebrated on the 13th and 14th December every year. It is essentially a memorial service held in the Kira House ruins. The Gishi Sai festival in Tokyo is held in the memory of 47 vassals who avenged the killing of their master.

Gishi Sai Event

Gishi Sai event in Tokyo is held in two locations, namely:
  • Sengakuji Temple – Sengakuji Temple in Minato-ku is a popular venue for the Gisha Sai event. It is at a walking distance from the Sengakuji underground railway station. The surface rail station nearest to Sengakuji
    Temple is Shinagawa. The incident of avenging their master’s death by his 47 faithful vassals is enacted in the form of ‘joruri’ a local term for narrative ballad. The incident occurred in Akoh in 1703.
  • Honjo Matsuzaka-cho Park – A service in the memory of 47 faithful samurai warriors are held at the Kira house ruins. On 14th December, every year, thousands of fans from Chushingura throng the Honjo Matsuzaka-cho Park in Sumida-ku, Tokyo 130 0026 to participate in this ‘Righteous Samurai Festival’. Honjo Matsuzaka-cho Park is within walking distance from Ryogoku railway station.
Gishi Sai is observed with reverence and respect in Tokyo.
