Demography of Tokyo

The Demography of Tokyo is an important aspect of the city. Tokyo is the capital of Japan and being the administrative and cultural head that it is, the people and their life status defines the living standard of people in other parts of Japan. Tokyo has for many hundreds of years continued to develop as an urban center. As a result of this urbanization, people from all over Japan has relocated to Japan, primarily in need of a livelihood.

Most of the people in Tokyo as in other parts of Japan are native Japanese. The Japanese natives account for about 98.5% of the total population of Tokyo.

Ethnicity of Tokyo People
The rest of the population is constituted by 0.4% Chinese, 0.5 % Koreans and 0.7% other minor groups. These demographic statistics have been reported by the CIA World Fact Book. Anthropological studies would reveal that the Japanese people belong to the Mongoloid ethnicity with distinct features of other Asian races as well. Hence they show traits of Caucasian and Malayan races as well. The Indonesians, Koreans and Chinese ethnicities also had influence on the Japanese people in terms of ethnic features.

Western People Residing in Tokyo
According to 2005 data estimation, there have been more than 50,000 people from western countries residing in Tokyo. There are around 4000 Australians, 21, 500 North Americans, 22,500 Europeans, 350 Argentinians and 1,000 New Zealanders in Tokyo.
