Bureau of Waterworks of Tokyo


In 1898, water supply services started in Tokyo. The services have been developed then onwards. The Bureau of Waterworks of Tokyo provides this service to 25 municipalities of Tama area and to about 12.13 million people of the wards of Tokyo.

The Bureau of Waterworks of Tokyo has taken up certain policies to cater proper water services to the residents. One of the recent policies was the Tokyo Waterworks Management Plan 2004. This policy was applicable from 2004 to 2006. The organization has also undertaken projects so that they can meet the requirements of residents living in the metropolitan city.

Bureau of Waterworks, one of the civic bodies of Tokyo Metropolitan Government ensures purified and safe water to their service areas. Purification of water involves carbon and ozone treatment of water. It has also undertaken policies to replace water pipes.

service to serve them better. It has focused more attention towards the management of water supply of regional areas of Tama area. It looks in adopting better measures to curtail expenditure rates and on the other fully utilize the available resources.

According to the survey report of 31st March 2005, Bureau of Waterworks of Tokyo serves an area of about 1,222.3 sq km. It supplies an average of 4,451,000 cubic meter of water daily in Tokyo and Tama area. The Bureau of Waterworks of Tokyo has employed 4,683 staff to serve the people. The civic body of Tokyo has utilized 25,021 km of pipeline to provide water supply to 6,433,000 sites in Tokyo and Tama area.
