Bureau of Sewerage of Tokyo

Bureau of Sewerage of Tokyo aims at maintaining a healthy urban environment. It looks after the sewerage management in the city. The organization has to manage both the disposal as well as its treatment. Bureau of Sewerage of Tokyo serves the wards of Tokyo and the Tama area. In 1884, the upgraded sewerage system was introduced in Tokyo.

In the municipalities of Tama area, the bureau is concerned with the treatment of sewage of public sewerage system. The sewerage system maintained in this area by Bureau of Sewerage of Tokyo is river based.

There are 7 treatment plants in the Tama area. Everyday these treatment plants accumulate about 0.86 million tons of wastewater. In the Tokyo city 13 wastewater treatment plants have been set up. About a volume of 4.6 million tons of wastewater is received by these treatment plants per day.

The Bureau of Sewerage of Tokyo is involved with repairing, maintaining and rebuilding the sewerage pipelines in Tokyo. The sewerage pipelines require to be well maintained to avoid any hazards. As the proper sewerage system had been introduced in the city
as early as 1884, certain parts of the system require reconstruction or repairing.

Rainwater management by Bureau of Sewerage of Tokyo has been undertaken to control flood conditions. Flooding in the sewerage lines in the district is generally caused by sudden entry of excessive amount of rainwater. This occurs as the permeability of ground has decreased due to urbanization. Bureau of Sewerage of Tokyo has taken measures to upgrade the pumping stations and the pipelines so as to offer better management of wastewater and rainwater. It has installed monitoring system for measuring rainfall. This system is known as Tokyo Amesh.

Generally, the same pipelines are used for drainage of rainwater as well as wastewater. Due to this, wastewater is often drained into sea or gets mixed with river water. During heavy showers, sewage cannot be treated. For storing sewage during this time, reservoirs have also been constructed by this civic body of Tokyo.

Bureau of Sewerage is under the Metropolitan Government of Tokyo. It publishes a newsletter in English so that it can convey the works they have undertaken to the people of Tokyo and to the rest of the world.
