Turin is the capital of the Piedmont region and a major industrial city in northwestern Italy. The French besieged the city for 117 days in 1706 and it became the capital of the newly proclaimed United Italy in 1861. The development of the city and its industries started after World War II, made many from the southern regions of Italy to immigrate to Turin. The city, well-known for the Shroud of Turin, is a major industrial center. The mayor, elected every five years, governs the city.

Tourist Attractions in Turin
  • Buildings and structures are the major landmarks in Turin are well known. Mole Antonelliana and Palatine Towers are important symbols of the city. Some of the other attractions in the city are:
  • The Cathedral of St John the Baptist: It houses the Shroud of Turin, an old linen cloth with an imprint of a man and the Basilica church of Superga situated in the hills above the city.
  • Museo Egizio – This museum features a collection of Egyptian relics including Statue of Ramesses II and Sarcophagus of Ibi.
  • Savoy Residencies – It consists of a group of structures, which served as the residence for royals. The residencies have bee listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
  • Palazzo Chiablese – This structure is a part of the Royal Palace of Turin. It usually is closed for public but is open during events like during press conferences, cultural events and concerts.
  • Royal Armory – There is an extensive display of arms from the 16th and 17th century in the armory.
Transportation in Turin
Subway lines in Turin connect the city to Collegno with Porta Susa railway station and ha snow extended to the Porta Nuova railway station. The Caselle International Airport Sandro Pertini located 13 kilometers downtown is the international airport in the city. Railway services from Dora Station and bus service from Porta Nuova and Porta Susa railway stations serve the airport.
