TURIN

Turin is the capital of the Piedmont region and a major industrial city in northwestern Italy. The name of Turin is derived from Tau, a Celtic word that means mountains. The French besieged the city for 117 days in 1706 and it became the capital of the newly proclaimed United Italy in 1861. The development of the city and its industries after World War II, made many from the southern regions of Italy to immigrate to Turin. The city well known as the home of the Shroud of Turin is a major industrial center. The mayor, elected every five years has the authority over the city of Turin.



Area & Location: Lies in the northwest Italy, on the west bank of the Po River, Turin is surrounded on the western and northern front by the Alps. The hills of Monferrato lie on its southern front. It covers 130 sq. km and has a population of 908,000. Its province covers 6,830 sq. km making it one of the largest in the nation. Its metropolitan area has about 1.7 million inhabitants.

Tourist Attractions: The city has many landmarks that make the city famous. Tourists are often attracted by these landmarks.

Transportation: The city is properly linked by rail and road networks. The subway line based on the VAL system known as Metrotorino is the other facility that connects the city with other regions. The 'Porta Nuova' railway station in Turin's town center also serves the city. The extension of the next leg of the station, which will be an underground transport project will be

another plus point for the transportation facilities offered by the city.

Hotels:Turin is known as the birthplace of solid chocolate. Doret, a revolutionary machine that could make solid chocolate was invented in the city in the18th century. Museo Egizio, which has the most important collection of Egyptian antiquities, the Savoy Residences and a circuit of great historical and architectural interest are the other attractions of the city that give a clear idea about the history of the city. Turin also is home to Palazzo Chiablese, the Royal Armoury, the Royal Library, Palazzo Madama, Palazzo Carignano, Villa della Regina, and the Valentino Castle that are the fascinations of the tourists.
