Located in central-western region of Italy, the country’s capital Rome is the largest as the most populated city in the country. More than 2 million people live in Rome in an area spread over 496.3 square miles. There are 8,101 communes in the city and is governed by a mayor. Being the capital of Italy, Rome is also the seat of the Italian government. The climate here is Mediterranean with mild to warm spring and autumns seasons.

Tourist Attractions in Rome
Rome is a popular tourist destination with monuments such as Vatican Museums and the Colosseum being ranked as the 50 most visited tourist destinations in the world. With the Vatican City located here, many people come over for religious tourism as well. Apart from this, Rome is full of archaeological and artistic treasures. Some of the attractions that one can visit in Rome include:
  • Talking statues of Rome – These statues have become the favored place for people to come and voice their opinions about politics and social issues. Pasquino, Marforio, il Facchino and Madama Lucrezia are the popular ones.
  • Obelisk of Montecitorio – There are several obelisks around the city and this is a popular one. It was initially brought to the city by Augustus in BC 10. Later on it was revived and put up by Pope Pius VI in front of the Palazzo Montecitorio.
  • Trevi Fountain – This landmark fountain is famous all over for the coin throwing tradition. Apparently, those who throw a coin in this fountain are sure to come back to the city again. Each day about 3000 euros are thrown here, which is used as a subsidy for the needy.
  • Villa Borghese gardens – This stunning garden features a number of buildings, museums and other attractions. Exposition's Zoo, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna and Zoological Museum are some of the attractions to explore.
  • The Colosseum – This amphitheatre is considered the greatest work of Roman engineering and architecture. It has a capacity of seating 50,000 spectators. Every year, thousands of people visit the Colosseum.
Transportation in Rome
Buses, tram and urban train network offer above ground transport network in Rome. Trambus S.p.A. operates the bus network; the network has over 350 bus lines and around 8 thousand bus stops.


Being located in the middle of Italy, Rome is the main railway center in the country. The primary railway stations are - Termini and Roma Tiburtina. There is a two line metro system in Rome with lines A and B. The A line operates from Ottaviano, Anagnina and Battistini. The B line operates from Rebibbia to Termini station.

The intercontinental Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport, Rome Ciampino Airport and Roma-Urbe Airport are the major airports in Rome. Due to traffic congestion, there are restrictions in place for vehicle going to the city center during daylight hours.
