NAPLES

Naples is the largest city in southern Italy. The city rich in historical, artistic and cultural traditions and gastronomy is also the capital of Campania Region and the Province of Naples. Founded between the 7th and 6th centuries BC by the Greeks, it was given the name 'Neapolis'. It is considered as the home of pizza the traditional food of Italy. The city is also the site of three major military bases.



Area & Location: Located halfway between the volcano, Vesuvius and a separate volcanic area, the Campi Flegrei, Naples cover 117 sq. km. The city has a population of one million. The metropolitan area of the city occupies 4,000,000 inhabitants and holds the title of being the second largest city in the nation.

Tourist Attractions: Being one of the beautiful cities in Europe, which is rich in history and monuments, Naples is often visited by the tourists.

Transportation: Tourists from all parts of the world can reach Naples by air. The Naples International Airport is the easiest means of access to the city from outside. Naples Train Station can take people to most of the attractions in the city. Local buses available in the city are a great way to get around the city. Naples funicular (tram) that travel up the hill of Vomero is another means of transportation in Naples. Naples Metro, boats and hydrofoils are the other convenient transportation facilities provided by the city.

Hotels:Naples known as the birthplace of the traditional Pizza, has a number of hotels that serve fried slices of aubergine alternated with mozzarella,

tomato sauce and parmesan, Sfogliatella typical Neapolitan pastry and many other items. Naples is also known for its ice cream (gelato). Cathedral of St. Januarius, Santa Chiara, San Lorenzo Maggiore, Santa Maria Donna Regina and Santa Maria del Carmine are the miraculous churches in Naples. Renowned for its old castles, Naples possesses a wide range of historical places and museums such as Castel dell'Ovo - a main feature in the panorama of the Gulf of Naples, Castel Capuano -built by William I, Maschio Angioino Castel Sant'Elmo- that looks over the city from the Vomero hill, La Villa Comunale- a royal park with the oldest aquarium, are the major landmarks of the city. Archeologico Nazionale Napoli, that contains a large collection of Roman artifacts and The Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte that contains art collections including works of Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli and Caravaggio entices the tourists. Naples, the home of the Teatro di San Carlo, the oldest active opera house in Europe, also has many other monuments like Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Cuomo, Porta Capuana that capture the attention of the visitors.
