St. Patrick's Cathedral is among the most popular religious site of the country. The cathedral has both religious and historical significance as the site of St. Patrick's Cathedral is considered to be the most ancient Christian site in Ireland, where St. Patrick baptized converts.

History of St. Patrick's Cathedral

It is the largest church of Ireland, which was constructed between 1191 and 1270. From the 5th century to nearly 1191, St. Patrick's Church had a wooden structure. The city of Dublin has two cathedrals that belong to the Church of Ireland and act as co-cathedrals. One among them is the St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Due to its dilapidated condition, the cathedral was reconstructed in the 1870s. As a result the present building and decoration reflects the Victorian style. At the time revival of the cathedral, the ancient records could not be preserved. Thus there is very little information that how much of the current building is medieval and how much of it is Victorian.

This majestic cathedral of Ireland is 91 meters long externally. The central area of St. Patrick's Cathedral is 17 meters high. It was originally constructed in an early English Gothic style with heavy and strong walls.

The interiors of St. Patrick's Cathedral is adorned with memorials and remembrances of important families and individuals who are some way related to the cathedral. There is a portrait of Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels in the cathedral which shows St Patrick's in the background. He was the Dean of the cathedral for several years.

Visiting Hours of St. Patrick's Cathedral

The visiting hours of St. Patrick's Cathedral is between 9.00hrs and 18.00hrs from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays from March to October, the cathedral is open from 9.00hrs to 18.00hrs and from November to February it allows admission from 9.00hrs to 17.00hrs. The Cathedral is closed for visitors on special days like Saint Stephen's Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On Sundays, visitors are not allowed to enter from 10.45 to 12.30 and 14.45-16.30 except for worship.

Presently, St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin has been a venue for numerous public national ceremonies. The Remembrance Day ceremonies of Ireland are held in this cathedral every year in the month of November. The cathedral is visited by hundreds of pilgrims every year.
