Phoenix Park is the biggest enclosed urban park in Dublin and also in Europe. This beautiful park sprawls over a total area of 712 hectares (1,760 acres). It is located on the north bank of the River Liffey, 3km to the west of the Dublin city center. The park is nearly ovoid in shape with a circumference of 11km (7m).
The maintenance of the Phoenix Park is the responsibility of the municipality of Dublin. It is popularly believed that the park derived its name from the mythical bird, Phoenix. But a number of Irish experts consider that the name was derived from "Fion Uisce meaning "clear water".
The Phoenix Park is a well maintained public park adorned with vast expanses of greenery, ornamental

gardens and nature trails. Some rare varieties of trees including chestnut,oak, lime, beech and pine can be seen in the park. A zoo, located in the park that covers 30 acres of land and has more than 700 animals and tropical birds. The Park also houses some important buildings like the Ordinance Survey offices, US Ambassadors residence and Garda Siochana headquarters. Every year motor races are held in the Phoenix Park.
Admission to Phoenix Park is free for all visitors. The main entrance of the Park is at Parkgate Street close to Castle knock. The main gates of the park are never closed and the side gates are open from 7.00 am to 11.00 pm. Phoenix Park in Dublin is visited by huge number of both local people and tourists which is a perfect place to relax from the busy city life.
