James Joyce emerged in the 20th century literary scene as one of the most powerful authors, in the interim period following the two World Wars. The name of James Joyce is associated with the popularity of a particular literary genre, known as the Stream of Consciousness Novel. Born in a middle-class, Roman Catholic Irish family, the major part of Joyce's adulthood was spent in Irish mainland. In spite of this he had a strong affinity towards his motherland. In fact, most of the novels of James Joyce revealed his psychological association with his motherland.
Life and Career of James Joyce
Joyce was born on 2nd February 1882, at Rathgar in Dublin. After completing his schooling, then he went to the newly-founded University of Dublin in 1898, to study contemporary languages like Italian, English and French. It is from this time that he became interested in the theatrical and literary activities of the city, and published his first literary work, the review of the New Dramas of Henrick Ibsen. He also presented a paper called "Drama and Life" in the Literary and Historical Society of the University College in Dublin. After completing his graduation, Joyce also studied medicine.
Novelist James Joyce
The achievements of James Augustine Aloysius Joyce as a novelist are exceptional. His experiences on Ireland constitute the subject matter as well as the settings of most of his fictions like the "Dubliners". personal development of a gifted artist. Here, Joyce shows the stages of his gradual realization and attainment of self-consciousness and adulthood. In fact, in this novel, Joyce concentrated more on the psychological development of the character, rather than his external environment. Moreover, Joyce in this novel has extensive used interior monologue, a literary technique, which is also common and visible in his other novels.
Though Dublin forms the setting of Joyce's famous novel, the "Ulysses", yet the very title refers to classics; about the hero of "Odyssey" by Homer. Apart from the novel having some religious undertones, Joyce as an experimenter, made use of almost every literary technique like jokes, stream of consciousness, parody and so on, at the time of character portrayals. In fact, the action of "Ulysses" brings in the incidents and characters of Homer's "Odyssey" into the modern Dublin society. Exploring different aspects of the Dublin life, the book is thus an exhaustive account of the city as such.
As a serious novelist, Joyce's works explored human relationships. His style was lucid and frank, involving literary allusions, verbal cadences and creative patterns.
