History of Christ Church Cathedral
The origins of Christ Church Cathedral dates back to the 1030 AD. Originally it was a Viking church, which was founded by the 1st bishop of Dublin or Dúnán and a Norse king of Dublin known as Sitriuc. Christ Church Cathedral was renovated during the Victorian age, with the help of Henry Roe, a distiller, who spent more than 230,000 pounds. In 1982 a 2-year restoration plan was implemented to renovate the stonework and roof of the cathedral. A new organ was installed by Kenneth Jones of Bray in 1984. Since 1997 the new lighting and heating system have been introduced and the huge 12th century crypt was restored.
The Treasures of Christ Church exhibition is very interesting as it features numerous artifacts and manuscripts that reflect 1000 years of worship in the cathedral. The exhibition provides information on the church' s history as well. Some of the items that are displayed are candlesticks and the tabernacle of the 17th century, when James II was the ruler, a royal silver plate of King William III and much more.
