Ilam




Ilam lies in the south western part of Iran bordering Iraq. The province of Ilam is also known as Elam. The city of Ilam make the provincial center of Iran. Ilam is bordered by the province of Khuzestan in the south,
in the north by Kermanshah province, Lurestan province in the east. Iraq which forms the border of Iran in the west shares a common border of 425 kilometers with Iran. The cities of the province of Ilam is comprised of Ilam, Dehloran, Mehran, Shirvan Va Chardavol, Dareh Shahr, Aivan, Arkovaz Malek Shahi and Abdanan. The Ilam province covers a total area of 19,086 square kilometers.

According to 2005 estimate, the population of Ilam province was 540000 approximately. The main languages spoken in Ilam are Kurdish, Luri, Laki and Persian. Kurdish comprise the major density of population in the capital of Ilam province. Lur are the other predominant section who reside mostly in the southern part of the province of Ilam. They are basically the Shia's Muslims.

The climate of Ilam is quite warm in comparison to the other parts of Iran. But the whole of Ilam is not warm. There are quite a few mountains in the north and north eastern part of Ilam province. These mountainous regions are quite cold. The average rainfall recorded in the province of Ilam is 578 mm. The highest temperatures are mostly recorded in the month of August while cold weather is found in February. In February, the temperature can be as low as 0.4 °C.

The ideal site of visit in Ilam is the peak of Kabir Kuh which forms a part of the Zagros mountains. Ilam has 174 historical sites that form the prime attraction for the tourists to Ilam.
