Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala, the Indian state. The name of the city has been derived from the deity of the Hindu temple in the city Sri Padmanabhaswami temple. The name 'Thiruvananthapuram' means City of Lord Anantha. The city, which was officially called as Trivandrum, changed its name in 1991. The city was earlier rule by Ays and was later taken over by the rulers of Venad in the 10th century. In 1729, Marthanda Varma, the founding ruler of Travancore rose to the accession and made it the capital of Travancore in 1745. The reign of Swathi Tirunal Maharaja and Ayilyam Thirunal Maharaja in the 19th century flourished the city and after the Indian independence in 1947, Travancore joined the Indian union. The city became the capital of Thiru-Kochi in 1949, and after the formation of Kerala state on November 1, 1956, it was made the capital of the new state. It is now the headquarters of Thiruvananthapuram district and home to all major central and state government offices.

Area & Location: Located on the west coast of India, the city sits on the hills by the seashore. Thiruvananthapuram lies between 8.5° Latitude North and 76.9° Longitude East. It covers an area of 194 sq. km and has a population of 745,000 with a density of 3,500 per sq. km making it the largest and the most populous city in the state.

Tourist Attractions: Being the capital city, Thiruvananthapuram has many historically important places to visit. Also, the various beaches in the city are the main attraction of the tourists.

Transportation: The Thiruvananthapuram International Airport serves the city.

The Central Railway Station connects the city with all other cities and states in the country. The construction of Deep Water Container Trans-shipment Port is on the Cards. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation that handles a number of buses links the city with other districts. The number of private buses, taxis, auto rickshaws and two wheelers are the forms of public transport in the city.

The hotels which are located on the beaches provide a real entertainment to the tourists who can avail the opportunity to taste seafoods and have a spectacular view of the sea.

Places of Attraction:Beaches have made the city popular among the tourists. The famous beach named Kovalam beach is the main tourist attraction of the city. People from all parts of the world gather here to chill themselves and also to taste the delicious seafoods available in the seaside restaurants. Shanmugham beach is the other attractive beach in the city. Veli Lake known for boating is another major tourist destination. The Thumba rocket launching station, the famous Sri Padmanabha Swami temple, State Legislative Assembly, State museum are the other important places in the city.
