This University was founded under the Poona University Act that was passed on February 10, 1948. The first vice chancellor of Pune University was Dr. M. R. Jayakar. The Chief Minister B. G. Kher contributed a lot in the expansion of the University campus.
Presently, Pune University looks after the educational institutes of 5 districts including Nasik, Dhule, Ahmednagar, Jalgaon and Pune. Initially, only 18 colleges were affiliated to the University. At present, around 118 research institutes and 209 colleges are affiliated to the University. The University has a total strength of 1,70,000 number of students.
Some of the research institutes that are linked up with this University are MACS, National Chemical Laboratory, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, CWPRS, NIV and Deccan College.
Pune University offers comprehensive courses in Arts, Science, Law, Commerce, Management and Engineering. For getting admission in some courses, students are required to appear entrance examinations.
