Rice, jowar, bajra, sugarcane, groundnut and sunflower are the main crops grown in Pune district. Among the vegetables, onions, potatoes, carrots, garlic, yams, sweet potatoes, caladium and radish are grown extensively in Pune. Pune is also known for its fruits like mango, banana, pomegranate, grapes, and 'chiku'. Many of these agricultural products are used for commercial purposes.
Sugarcane is one of the important cash crops of Pune. This district has 10 sugar mills in the Pune 'talukas' of Indapur, Haveli, Baramati, Shirur, Purandhar and Daund. Other agriculture based industries include pickles and sauces, spices and derivatives, dehydrated vegetables and fruits, meat and poultry, dairy products, essential and aromatic oils, cattle and poultry feed, processed food, herbal products, and agricultural equipments.

The Second Economic Rung - Pune Industry
Chemical industries form a significant segment of Pune industrial activity. The products include paints, lubricating oil, ammonium compounds like ammonium chloride and liquor ammonia, acrylic blue, and lead compounds. A number of pharmaceutical companies are housed in the Daund 'taluka' of Pune district. CIPLA and Orion Remedies are two such concerns.
Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has built an Industrial Sector in Daund 'taluka', or Kurkumbh. This industrial sector measuring 812 hectares has 125 industries from different segments like iron foundries, fabricators, automobile parts manufacturers and IT related industries.

Many of the leading MNC and Indian IT hardware manufacturers have operations in Pune, IBM and WIPRO being among them.
The backbone of Pune services or commercial sector is provided by nationalized, foreign and private Indian banks. State Bank, Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank, IndusInd Bank Limited, ABN Amro and Citibank are some of the renowned commercial banks having operations in Pune. Pune also has a fully operational stock exchange at Shivleela Chambers, Sadasiv Peth, Pune - 30.
