Pune Theater has developed over centuries, though it was in the 20th century that it gained nation wide popularity. In fact Marathi Theater essentially seeks its roots in the theaters that had developed in Pune. The Bhave Theater Company, founded by Vishnupath Bhave was the pioneering force in popularizing Marathi and Pune theater productions. Some important theater personalities from Pune include Vishnupath Bhave, Chadrakant Kale, Laxmi Narayan and Machhindra Kamble.
