Shanta Shelke is one of the renowned Marathi lyricists, writers and music composers of India. Many of her compositions have been sung by great singers like Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishori Amonkar. She has written songs for almost 300 Indian films. Her first song was heard in the film named Ram Ram Pavna in the year 1950.
Shanta Shelke 's Early Life and Education
Born in a small village named Manchar in Maharashtra, Shanta Shelke cultivated the love for poetry from a very young age. Her parents were well educated and were fond of reading rare compositions like Shri Geet Ratnakar and Manas Geet Sarovar. She came to Pune when she was nine years old. She did her schooling from Huzurpaga. Her marriage at the age of sixteen did not last long as she wanted to move on with life, independently and gain higher knowledge. She completed her Masters with Marathi Language in the year 1944 from Mumbai University.
Shanta Shelke: Moving Ahead in Life
After spending 5 years with "Navyug" as an assistant editor, Shanta Shelke joined Nagpur Hislop College as a professor. She later served Dayanand College in Mumbai. During
this period she worked with organizations like The Theater Examination Board and the Film Sensor Board. She also translated several English books into Marathi. The four different collections of poems that were published by her are Rupasi, Varsha, Gondon and Toch Chandrama. Her

Marathi translations include Japanesee Haiku to Pancyavarchya Paklya, Kalidasa's Medhdoot and the novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

Shanta Shelke's contribution to Marathi literature is unforgettable. She was a highly talented lady. Besides writing poems, novels and stories, she was also known for writing newspapers columns. Ek Pani, Janta Ajanta, Madarangi are some of them. DhoolPati, Anandache Jhad, Avad Nivad and Sansmarane are some of the Lalit literatures of the writer.
Shanta Shelke received Yashvantrao Chawan Pratishan Award, Soor Singar Award and Government of India award for her immense contributions. She passed away on 6th June, 2002. Her compositions and compilations will always remain immortal for one and all.
