Pune Road Network has developed around three main highways that traverse this cultural capital of Maharashtra. National Highway 4 connects Pune to Surul in the south and Khalapur in the north west. National Highway no. 9 connects Tembhurni in the south east to Pune, and continues as National Highway 50 to Bote in the north.
The district of Pune is surrounded by Ahmadnagar in the east and north, Thane in the north west, Raigarh in the west and south west, Satara in the south, and Solapur in the South east. Pune district covering an area of little more than 15,640 sq. km has a road network of almost 13,640 km. This road network of Pune connects 1866 villages and Pune city in 14 Pune 'talukas' or territories.
Pune National Highways
Three national highways pass through Pune:
- NH 4 between Mumbai in the west and Chennai in the south passes through Pune. NH 4, a part of the Golden Quadrilateral of highways connects Pune to Bangalore also. Satara, Kolhapur and Kagal all in Maharashtra are connected to Pune by NH 4. National Highway 4 runs through the villages of Shirwal, Naraspur, Hadapsar, Khadki, Tolegaon, Wadgaon, Lonavala, and Khandala within Pune district.
- NH 9 connects Pune in Maharashtra to Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh. Indapur, Solapur,

and Umarga in Maharashtra, followed by Rajeshwar, Homnabad, and Mangalgi in Karnataka, and thereafter Zahirabad, Hyderabad, Suriapetm and Vijywada in Andhra Pradesh are connected by NH 9 to Pune. The villages of Kambhargaon, Bhigvan, Ravangaon, Loni Kaibhor, and Theur within the district of Pune are connected by this highway.
- NH 50 connects Pune to Nasik. The cities of Sangamner, Narayangaon, and Khed all in Maharashtra are connected by this highway. Chakan, Rajgurunagar, Malegaon, Mancharo, Kalamb, Narayangaon, and Aleo are the important locations on this highway between Pune and Nasik.
Pune City Roads
Some of the main roads in Pune city include:
- Bhandarkar Road connecting Bhandarkar Institute and Deccan Gymkhana
- G.A. Kulkarni Road connects Kothrud to Karve Nagar
- FC Road connecting Deccan Gymkhana to Old Governor's House
- Jangli Maharaj Road between Shivajinagar and Garware Bridge in Deccan Gymkhana
- Mahatma Gandhi Road.
