Pune religion throws light on the religious beliefs, customs and festivals of the local inhabitants of the city. Though the city has always been a Hindu dominated place, over the years people of different belief have settled here for various purposes.
Pune Religious Events
The chief religious festivals in Pune include the Pune Festival or the Ganesh Chaturthy festival and the Osho Festival. The Ganesh Chaturthy festival is celebrated all over Maharashtra. During this festival the idol of Lord Ganesh or the Elephant headed God is worshiped with much pomp and grandeur.

Formerly the immersion of the idols had been causing harm to the environment but the government has introduced measures to control the damage. Temporary tanks are built near the riverbanks for the purpose of immersions and the flowers for worship are used for making manure. The Ganesh Chaturthi does not occur on fixed dates each year but the time is approximately in August or September.
Pune Religious Holidays
The government holidays in Pune are decided as per the local festivals and national holidays as well. Pune has a fair share of Muslims, Christian, Buddhists, Zoroastrians and Sikhs. All major Islamic events are observed as holidays.
