Pune has been referred to as 'Punya Vishaya', or 'Punaka Vishaya' during the 8th century AD when it was ruled by the Rashtrakutas. In the copper plates dating back to the 10th century AD Pune was called 'Punaka Desha' - 'Desha' meaning 'country', and 'Punaka' is 'holy'. Subsequently it was called Kasabe Pune.
Thorala Bajirao Peshwa who ruled from 1740-1761 was the first ruler to bring in urbanization in Pune. He formed wards or 'peths' for better town administration, set up a regular water supply from Katraj Lake for the town, and constructed the Parvati Temple.
Pune presently is one of the most modern cities of Maharashtra. It is the Head Quarter of the Indian Army's Southern Command, Air base for Indian Air Force, and a Military Cantonment. It is the home of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, Wrangler P.R. Paranjape, and Mahatma Jyotiba Phule.
