Pune Geography is of primary interest to tourists traveling to this wonderful city of Maharashtra. Pune, located at a distance of approximately 180 kilometers from Mumbai, is situated towards the south-easterly direction of the capital of Maharashtra. Pune extends over an area of 138 square kilometers.
The terrain - Relief of Pune
Pune, situated at the confluence of Mula and Mutha rivers, has the geographical position of 18º 32' N and 73º 51' E. Pune in Maharashtra, situated at a height of 559 meters, is 40 per cent under trees. The name 'Pune' is derived from the word 'Punya' meaning 'holy'. Pune is considered 'holy' due to its location at the intersection of two rivers. However, Bhima is the main river that flows through the city.
Pune is surrounded by Ahmednagar in the north-east, Solapur in the south east, Satara in the south, Colaba in the west, and Thane in the north-west. Physically, Pune can be divided into three parts:
- The western mountains or Ghatmatta is about 15 to 30 km distant

- Towards east of Ghatmatta, the 'Maval' plain extends for 15 to 30 kilometers
- Farther East these plains are called 'Desh'.
The sun and rain - Pune Climate
Pune climate can be differentiated into summer time and winter time. Summer in Pune extends from end March to June beginning with the temperature ranging between 20º C to 38º C. The days are hot and nights warm during these months. During the winter months that last from mid November to January end, the temperature varies between 10º C to 28º C. The days are pleasant and the winters cool.
Warm days and pleasant evenings are the characteristics of the autumn and spring season in Pune. Autumn lasts from mid October to mid November, while spring lasts from February till the middle of March.
The rainy season in Pune city commences in early June and lasts till early October. During these four months Pune receives an annual rainfall of about 70 cm, which is moderate. Pune, being a little away from the seas, is not very humid. The early mornings and evenings are pleasant throughout the year.
