Bedsa Caves |
|
The Bedsa Caves near Pune is one of the preferred excursions from Pune city. The caves were the dwelling places of Buddhist monks and hence the different parts of the caves have been specially developed for resting, worshiping and meditation.
The walls of the Bedsa Caves were beautifully painted during the ancient period. Samandinaka, a princess of Mandavi kingdom had this place made for the monks. The destruction of the paintings had been done when the walls were re-painted centuries later on the occasion of arrival of a British officer. In spite of all these, there is much to look forward within this relatively small structure. The Chaitya and the Vihara of the caves are the main attractions in addition to the smaller restrooms or chambers. The Vihara can be differentiated into nine smaller cells.
|
The windows are adorned with fine small railings and the walls are decorated with exquisite engravings. The Chaitya has in its surroundings a large water tank. Strangely enough, inside of the chamber is decorated with the idol of a heathen God. This God, called Yamai, is still worshiped by people of Koli tribe.

Tourists can access the Bedsa Caves either by the railways or by road. Regular state bus services are available from Pune. The nearest railway station is Kamshet Railway Station. The place is located some 3.5 kilometers from Pune. The Bedsa caves are located within the Bedsa village.
