Pune Administration


Pune Administration is structured and well formed. Pune district of 2 crore individuals is divided into 14 'talukas' under 11 'nagarpalikas' or municipal corporations. Pune city has two 'Mahanagarpalikas', and three cantonment boards. The districts of Pune are taken care of by 13 'Panchayat Samitis'.

Talukas of Pune District

    Pune District has 14 'Talukas' or territories. These are:
  • Indapur - An agricultural area where wheat, sugar cane, and jawar are grown. The place has sugar, and iron factories
  • Baramati – Famous for Shirsufal Lake and Kashivisheswar temple of 800 B.C.
  • Purandar - This Pune 'taluka' is renowned for its forest coverage with fauna like wolf, deer, rabbit, leopard, parrot, peacock and bulbul. The flora includes teak, oak, and sal.
  • Bhor – This is a hilly and forested region of Pune district, with wide varieties of flora dnd fauna. The 'Ambemohar' variety of rice grown in this area is famous. Baneswar picnic spot is in this region.
  • Velhe - This area is completely forested and hilly. The Rajgad and Torana forts are famous tourist attractions in this area.
  • Haveli – This 'taluka' has some part under forests, some under agriculture, and some under industry. Handloom cloth industries and sugar mills are the important secondary activities in this region.
  • Daund - Daund is one of the important 'talukas' in Pune district. This place has an impressive history, and noteworthy tourist attractions. The 'Tukai' and 'Firangai' temples, and Bahadurgad fort are all in this territory.
  • Shirur - This agricultural area is famous for its sweet lime, oranges, sugar cane, and wheat Mulshi – On the western fringes of Pune district, it is located on the Sahyadri hills. This area is famous for its forest lands 'Khamod' a variety of rice, is grown here.
  • Maval - This western 'taluka' is famous for its Lonavla and Khandala hill stations in the Sahyadri hills. Forests are important attractions of this region..
  • Khed – Khed is famous for its Bhimshankar Falls and the adjoining forest. Bhuikot fort and Sambaji Memorial in Vadu are other notable attractions.
  • Ambegaon - This agricultural region is one of the most populous 'talukas' of Pune district. According to 1991 census the population of Ambegaon was close to 200,000.
  • Junnar- This is an industrial area with oil refinery, paper mills, sugar factories, and blanket manufacturing factories. Agriculture also forms an important economic activity. Pune City
Except for Pune City, the other 13 talukas are under 11 municipal corporations, and 13 'Panchayat Samitis'.

Pune City

Pune City is under two 'Mahanagarpalikas', namely i) Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), and ii) Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Pune City with a population of 42 lakhs is also looked after by three Cantonment Boards:
