Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute


Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute or the V.J.I. Institute was set up in Mumbai in the year 1887. In the initial years, there were 2 departments in the institute. They were the Ripon Textile School and Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering. Previously Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute was known as Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute.

Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute in Mumbai was set up with an aim to provide necessary manpower trained in technical skills in the relevant industries in Mumbai. In 1903 measures were taken to expand the institute and introduce other courses. Distance Education Programs have also been introduced by V.J.I. Institute. The institute also encourages different student activities. It has hostel facilities for its students. It has a well equipped library and it has a placement cell.

Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute received the recognition of a Central Technological Institute by the Government of Mumbai in 1913. It also received an affiliation from the University of Bombay. A Board of Management maintains the institute which operates as an autonomous body.

The institute received the grant to be an autonomous institute in 2004. The Director of Technical Education has been appointed as the Chairman of this management board of Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute. As the secretary of this board, the Principal of V.J.I. Institute has been selected.

Departments in Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute in Mumbai

Apart from the 2 initial departments in the institute,
department of Electrical Engineering was inaugurated. Gradually the institute introduced several other departments for the students. The department of Technical and Applied Chemistry was introduced in 1906 and later in 1914, the Sanitary Engineering Department was set up in V.J.I. Institute, Mumbai. The course for studying B.A in Textile, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were introduced in this educational institute of India.

Presently, V.J.I. Institute, Mumbai offers courses for Under Graduate students and Post Graduate students. The institute also offers a course of Post Diploma. Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute has the following departments:

The institute was established in Byculla. The building for the institute was donated by Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit. But due to the steady expansion of the institute, it has to be shifted to a new location in Matunga. The new campus extends for about 16 acres of land. For the new building of Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, aids were offered by the Bombay Millowners' Association and the Mumbai Government. In 1931 the construction of the building was expanded to house the textile machinery.
