University of Mumbai


University of Mumbai has received the accreditation from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) as a 5 star university in India. Earlier it was known as University of Bombay. The two campuses are spread over an area of 230 acres and 13 acres respectively. The university classrooms are quite spacious and cover a total area of 22 square feet. Besides, the 354 colleges that are affiliated to the university, there are 2 post graduate centers and 36 departments.

Emergence of Mumbai University

This university is one of the three universities first established in India. It establishment dates back to the year 1957, formed as a consequence of Woods Education Dispatch. In the year 1996, the university was renamed when the Maharashtra Government changed the name of the city to Mumbai. Initially, only under graduate courses were offered but gradually the departments were widened. According to the Bombay University Act of 1953, the university was framed.

Courses offered at the University of Mumbai

The different courses of study offered at the Mumbai University include degree and diploma courses, post graduate degree courses and IT courses. Students can choose from the various faculties like Arts, Commerce, Science, Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Technology and Fine Arts.

Colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai

The university has a number of affiliated colleges that specialize in a particular field of study like Home science, B.Pharm, Physical Education, Engineering, Nursing, Medicine, Dental, Law, Aurveda, Arts Stream, Management Studies, Commerce and Fine Arts.
Some of the few organizations that are affiliated to the university are J.J College of Architecture, Academy for Administrative Services, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Academic staff college, Indian Council of Social Science Research and Indian Council of Social Science Research.

Campus Facilities at University of Mumbai
  • Library: The library started its function from 27th February, 1880. The library building was also a house for the administrative offices. The library comprises a rich collection of books on subjects like Indology, Mathematics, Bibliographies, and Social Sciences. Besides, it has a huge collection of manuscripts, research materials, books on travel and theology and history.
Department of Distance Education, Mumbai University

The university comprises a separate section to impart education through distance learning. This department includes varied courses for the arts, commerce and science stream, to be completed within a duration of 3 years. The master degree courses continue for 2 years. M.C.A involves a 3 years study program. On line admission to the distance education program is available to the students. Dhaneswar Harichandan is the director of the distance education institute of the Mumbai University.
