Mumbai Transportation


Mumbai Transportation comprises Mumbai local trains, and BEST buses. The city spread over 440 square kilometers extends to Mumbai metropolitan areas like Thane, Andheri, Kalyan, Malad, Kandvili, and Dahisar. These suburban areas are covered by Mumbai Suburban Railway, while the city limits are commuted by BEST buses. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are other popular modes of transport in Mumbai. Mumbai being composed of seven islands, ferry service in also extensively used.

Down the tracks – Mumbai Suburban Railways

Mumbai suburban trains are the cheapest and fastest mode of transport in and around Mumbai. These suburban EMU (electric multiple unit) trains operate in three sections:
  • The Central Railway connects Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (earlier called Bombay Victoria Terminus) and Karjat. Sandhurst Road, Currrey Road, Parel, Dadar Central, Matunga, Sion, Kurla, Vidya Vihar, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Bhandup, Mulund fall along this route.
  • The Western Railway connects Churchgate and Virar. The stations of Marine Lines, Charni Road, Grant Road, Bombay Central, Mahalaxmi, Elphistone Road, Dadar Western, Mahim, Bandra, Khar Road, Santa Cruz, Vile Parle, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Borivli,
    and Dahisar are covered by this railway.
  • The Harbour Line operates between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Mankhurd. The stations of Sandhurst Road, Dockyard Road, Cotton Green, Kurla, Chembur, and Govandi are connected by this Harbour Line.
These Bombay suburban trains ply for 20 hours a day.

Rolling Wheels – Mumbai Road Transport

Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (B.E.S.T.) operates bus services that cover the entire 440 square kilometers of Mumbai city. The BEST Company Limited was incorporated with the Mumbai municipality in 1947 and operates various categories of bus services like limited service, and regular service. A few of the popular routes plying within Mumbai city are:
  • Route no.9 – Route 9 buses connect most of the schools and colleges of Mumbai
  • Routes 1, 66, 202 – These routes ply throughout the day
  • Bus Route 161 – This service connects most of the oil reservoirs, and the Eastern fringes of Mumbai
  • Route no. 166 – Buses plying in this route connect majority of the Mumbai hospitals.
  • Bus routes 22 ltd, 25 ltd., and 320 – These routes connect the two main water reservoirs of Bombay city.
