Important Festivals: Mumbai city is in the state of Maharashtra. The people of Maharashtra are called Marathis. Mumbai city also celebrates the Marathi festivals, which are celebrated all over Maharashtra. The most important festival of Mumbai city, and indeed the whole of Maharashtra, is Ganesha Chaturthi. This is celebrated on the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the half elephant half human deity of Indians. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor in all the streets and by lanes of Mumbai city. People install idols of Lord Ganesha in shelters constructed on streets. Each household also installs an idol of Lord Ganesha in their house. This is worshipped for a few days and then immersed in the ocean with great fanfare and festivity. This festival lasts for 10 days.

Customs and Traditions: SIn Mumbai city, you can expect to see visions of extreme poverty existing side by side to pictures of extreme opulence. Slums and palatial buildings coexist side by side. A traditional folk dance of Maharashtra is called "lavni." Young women wearing nine-yard saris perform this dance. This dance used to be performed in the 18th and 19th century to entertain the tired soldiers during the Maratha Battle. The young women dance to the rhythmic beats of drums. Another traditional dance form of Maharashtra is the "koli" dance. This dance is danced by the fisher folk of Maharashtra. This dance is performed by both men and women who portray the act of rowing, the movement of waves, and the casting of nets to catch the fish.
