Tata Institute of Social Sciences


Tata Institute of Social Sciences or TISS was set up in Mumbai in 1936. Initially this institute was known as Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In the year 1944 the institute got its present name. This institute was set up with the initiative of the Trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust or SDTT.

SDTT has followed the notion of Dr. Clifford Manshardt in establishing Tata Institute of Social Sciences. It was actually his idea to set up an institute to carry on social studies on contemporary issues of India. His aim was to conduct research works on social issues and impart education regarding social work. The institute has expanded over the years. The University Grants Commission or UGC has given this institute the recognition of a deemed university in India.

Tata Institute of Social Sciences functions beyond a university. It offers services for social development and encourages services that seeks social justice. The institute offers training and encourages research programs. Students can participate in the different projects undertaken by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. For the noble services, Tata Institute of Social Sciences has received acclamation from different non governmental organizations as well as ministries under the Government of India. It has been recognized by organizations like the United Nations.

Courses Offered by Tata Institute of Social Sciences

Tata Institute of Social Sciences offers classroom training along with practical lessons. Students are encouraged to undertake research programs related to
social issues. Different agencies, state government and central government departments offer aids to carry out the research programs at TISS. The institute also conducts various researches from its own funds.

It has also set up a Research Development Cell to look after the research works in the institute. It has taken up research works in fields like tribal issues, education, disaster management and health. This institute offers different course programs like

Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai also conducts courses for continuing education. In 1969 this institute has been recognized to conduct programs of National Services Scheme or NSS by the Indian government. TISS has been identified as a Training, Orientation and Research Center. It also offers Refresher Courses in different areas like women education, information science and social work as granted by University Grants Commission or UGC. TISS also undertakes various training programs as part of the continuing education program.
