The foundation stone of the famous Taraporewala Aquarium, Mumbai was laid down in 1951 with the funds donated by Mr.Taraporewala. He was a benevolent man from the Parsi community. The total fund amount was 20,000 in Indian Currency. Presently, the maintenance costs are borne by the government. Visitors to the marine museum are not allowed to take snaps of the interiors of the Aquarium complex.
The Marine Life Spectacle of Taraporewala Aquarium
Taraporewala Aquarium is a marine aquarium of Mumbai, which houses a variety of marine animals. There are two large tanks in the museum and the division has been done in order to accommodate marine animals of different types. The larger animals and fishes such as the octopus, turtle, morays, sharks and kite fish are kept in one tank.
The other one contains the more delicate and smaller

species, such as the corals, sea horses, sea flowers and the likes. The corals are of different varieties and have been brought from the water bodies around Lakshadweep. Shells and shelled marine animals of different sizes from all over the world are placed in the aquariums. A lot of natural pearls too can be seen among the shells.
Visiting Taraporewala Aquarium: When and How?
The Taraporewala Aquarium in Mumbai remains open throughout the weekdays and also on weekends, except on Mondays. The visiting hour for tourists is from eleven in the morning till eight at night. On Sundays, when the crowd is bigger, the aquarium opens an hour earlier at ten in the morning. Public buses are frequent in the region so conveyance is not much of a problem.
Talks are on to develop the aquarium to an oceanarium where the visitors would be able to take a walk around the oceanarium to get a feel of life under the waters.
