Sydenham College


Sydenham College is located on 'B' Road, Churchgate, Marine Line and offers standardized Economics and Commerce-related study courses. It was established in October 22, 1913. This college has a long history regarding its establishment. Initially, it started its operation on a specific hired portion of Mumbai college of Elphinstone. At that time, only hundred students were there in the college.

The then governor Lord Sydenham showed personal interest in the establishment of this higher educational institute. During this time around 1,80,000 Rupees were donated by the Lord Sydenham Memorial Fund for the purpose of establishing college building. Thereafter, this Mumbai College was shifted to Lord Sydenham Memorial Fund for the purpose of establishing college building. Again in 1922, it changed its location. Presently, J. J. School of Architecture is occupying that specific land.

Initially, the college only had male students, however, in 1932, the first female student was seen in the college campus. Her name was Miss Y. K. Surveyor. In 1937, the college started offering full 4 year Commerce sources and since then, the number of students begun to rise higher. During that time, to cater to the needs of the newly joined students, some of the rooms in Sukhadwala Building were rented.

Finally, after World War II, in 1955, Sydenham College found its present location in Churchgate. Since a long time, the college is producing toppers at B.Com Examinations. Sydenham College also gives immense stress on conducting extra-curricular activities in the
college campus. The pupils of this college of Mumbai are indeed the perfect combination of discipline, intellect and good manners. Students from outside Mumbai also come here to study.

The junior college offers courses on English, Accountancy, Economics, Optional Language, Marathi, French, Book-keeping, Statistics, Business Studies, Financial Management, Mathematics, Business Economics, Environmental Studies, Business Communication, Business Law, Foreign Trade Studies, Mass Communication, Computer Programming, Advertising, International Marketing, Investment Analysis, Operational Research.

Shri A. M. Parikh is the Head of Department of Accounts, whereas, H. P. Parekh is the H.O.D of Business and Mercantile Law. This college offers hostel facilities to its students. It provides comfortable living rooms for catering the accommodation purpose of its students.

The college comprises canteen, library (having over 50000 books), auditorium, computer laboratory and common room. Throughout the year, this college organizes a number of soccer, swimming, badminton, tennis and volleyball events. It also has an organization for students' association that takes care of Computer Center, Annual Magazine, Nature Club, Gymkhana, Auditorium Committee and several others.

Its Alumni Association is also worth mentioning. Nitesh Agarwal is the Chairperson of this committee. This college comprises around 41 teaching staff and 37 non-teaching staff. Its activities are controlled by the Bombay University.
