Mumbai Suburban Railway is operated by Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Limited established in 1999. It was essentially formed to integrate suburban railway services with urban infrastructure developmental plan. Suburban Railway in Mumbai is served by the Central Railway and the Western Railway. 2226 train services cover a network of 319 kilometers everyday. Daily 6,300,000 passengers use the Bombay Suburban Railway Service.
The two railways namely, Central Railway and Western Railway share 191 rakes between them. These 12-car or 9-car rakes are run by EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) engines that run on 1500 volt DC overhead power supply.
The Central hub - Mumbai Central Railway
Central Railway in Bombay operates from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, earlier called Bombay Victoria Terminus or Bombay V.T. This railway operates two suburban routes in and around Mumbai city. These two routes are:
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Karjat – This route covers Sandhurst Road, Currey Road, Parel, Dadar Central, Matunga, Sion, Chunabhatti, Kurla, Vidya Vihar, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Bhandup, Mulund, Thane, Kalwa, Mumbra, Diva junction, Dombivli, Thakruli, Kalyan, Vithalwadi, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Basdlapur, Vangani, Shelu, Neral,

and Bhivpuri Road.
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Mankhurd – Locally termed the 'Harbour line' this route includes Sandhurst Road, Dockyard Road,
Cotton Green, Kurla, Chembur and Govandi railway stations. As the name suggests this route covers the dock area of Mumbai city.
The other suburban areas covered by Mumbai local trains under Central Railways include Panvel, Kalamboli, Navade Road, Taloja, Nilaje, Shahad, Ambivli, Titwala, Khandavli, Vashind, Asangaon, Atagaon, Khardi, and Kasara.
The Western Fringes - Mumbai Western Railway
Western Railway in Bombay operates the Churchgate – Virar railway route. This Western Railway line goes through Marine Lines, Charni Road, Grnat Road, Bombay Central, Mahalaxmi, Elphistone Road, Dadar Western, Matunga Road, Mahim, Bandra, Khar Road, Santa Cruz, Vile Parle, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Khandivli, Borivli, Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayander, Nalgaon, Vasai Road, anad Nalasopara railway stations.
Other suburbs covered by Mumbai local trains under Western Railway include Vaitarna, Saphala, Palghar, Umroli, Boisar, Vangaon, and Dahanu Road.
Mumbai Suburban Railway forms the backbone of transportation in Mumbai. The suburban train services remain operational for 20 hours a day.
