SNDT Women's University has been founded with an aim to impart higher education to Indian women. In this institute, both vocational and professional courses are offered. The primary aim of this institute is to empower women by providing non formal as well as formal education.
In the initial years SNDT Women's University started as a small educational institute for widows. It was set up in Pune by Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve. But later the university set up its headquarter in Mumbai in 1936. The university was named as Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Indian Women’s University but very soon its name again was changed to Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University or SNDT Women's University.
SNDT Women's University is considered as one of the universities in India that took initiative to start women's education. This university has about 45,000 students enrolled to it. There are 4 campuses of this university that are located at Pune, Palghar, Juhu and Churchgate. Twenty six colleges of Gujarat and Maharashtra are affiliated under SNDT Women's University. Three secondary schools set up for women are also under the management of this university.
Dr. P. C. Alexander, the Governor of Maharashtra is the Chancellor of SNDT Women's University. The Vice Chancellor of the university is Dr. M. A. Varghese. Dr. Hemlata Parasnis has been appointed as the Registrar of SNDT Women's University.
SNDT Women's University offers diplomas, certificates and doctoral programs to the students of the university.

The Under Graduate courses can be studied at the different institutions under the affiliation of this university. The courses offered at the Post Graduate level are conducted by the various departments of the university. The courses can be availed in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English. The university maintains a Center of Distance Education. There is a Department of Adult and Continuing Education and Extension Work under SNDT Women's University.
SNDT Women's University offers scholarships to needy students on basis of merit. The academic session in SNDT Women's University begins from June or July and it ends in April or May. It maintains a library and has a computer center. It also offers language training classes to students. Hostel facilities are available at this university.
