The post of Mumbai Sheriff has presently been dissolved due to the several opinions. The Mumbai Mumbai Sheriffs were not a typical police officer but actually he could be from any profession and achieved the post when the Chief Minister of Maharashtra appointed him.
The last Sheriff of Mumbai was Vijayapath Singhania. He was appointed by Vilasrao Deshmukh. Professionally, he was the chairman of the company, Raymond Limited. Prior to becoming a Sheriff, he had been in news because of aviation records. The first Sheriff of Mumbai, after the independence of India was Shataram Mahadeo Dahanukar.
The Duties of Mumbai Sheriff

- The Sheriff has to send the letter for calling people to the Mumbai High Court for hearing of the cases
- He is supposed to give out sealed and attached properties and look after the auction of the same if necessary
- Receiving delegates of foreign countries at the airports
- He has to be present at all important special functions of the Mumbai city
The office of the Mumbai Sheriff was in the ground floor of the Mumbai High Court. He does not have any executive power but he was given an office along with a staff.
