Ranjit Hoskote


Ranjit Hoskote was born in 1969. He is a popular contemporary poet of India. Besides being a poet, Ranjit Hoskote is also known as an art critic. His poetry has been much acclaimed and he has also written three anthologies of poems.

The birth place of Ranjit Hoskote is Mumbai in India. He completed his schooling from the Bombay Scottish School. Then he moved to Elphinstone College to pursue Politics. After completing his graduation, he studied Master of Arts in English Literature and Aesthetics from the University of Bombay. For some time Hoskote worked with the Times of India and later with The Hindu and Art India Magazine.

The anthologies like The Cartographer's Apprentice published in 2000, Zones of Assault in 1991 and The Sleepwalker's Archive in 2001 have been written by Ranjit Hoskote. He has also accomplished translation work of Marathi poems by V.A. Dahake in 1995. The name of this translated work is 'A Terrorist of the Spirit'. 'Vanishing Acts: New and Selected Poems (1985-2005) is a collection of some new poems along with Hoskote's already published poems.

Hoskote has shown his literary pursuits as an editor of an anthology. He has edited 'Reasons for Belonging: Fourteen Contemporary Indian Poets'. He wrote the biography of Jehangir Sabavala. This book is known as 'Pilgrim, Exile, Sorcerer: The Painterly Evolution of Jehangir Sabavala'. He has also penned ' Baiju Parthan: A User's Manual'.

Ranjit Hoskote has been honored a number of times for his poetic pursuit. He has been honored with Sanskriti Award for Literature in 1996. In 1997 he also won a competition by taking part in British Council/ Poetry Society All-India Poetry Competition. In 2004, Ranjit Hoskote was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Golden Jubilee Award. Hoskote used to be associated with the University of Iowa as a Fellow of International Writing Program in 1995.

Ranjit Hoskote has not only achieved success in India but he is known in countries outside India. His poems have been published in numerous international journals. One can read his poems in journals like Poetry Wales, Poetry Review Akzente and Iowa Review. Ranjit Hoskote's poems are also available in a translated version of German.
