The Rajabai Tower is a clock tower dating back to the 19th century. The clock of the tower has been maintained in its original analog form. The tower is located within the campus complex of the Mumbai University and the base of the tower is actually a library. The architecture of the tower was the work of Sir George Gilbert Scott and Mr. Premchand Roychand. The later is credited with the overall execution of the construction works. The Rajabai Tower was so named after the mother of Premchand Roychand. The later was also an eminent Jain stockbroker from Mumbai.
In the earlier times, the clock would play a number of musical alarms. These include tunes of God Save the King, Handel Symphony and other 13 music tunes. However, in the present times only chimes are sounded at specific times.
