Rahul Dev Burman had breathed a fresh lease of life into the music style of Hindi movie songs. His style is unique and is still a favorite among music lovers of all generations. The best of R.D. Burman music composition is from the 70s and 80s era. He was a music director and composer but also tried his hands in singing and acting. Many of his works have been brought out posthumously and they have proved that Burman's style of music is timeless.
R.D Burman was the son of late music composer S.D. Burman and the husband of singer Asha Bhonsle. He was born on June 27th, 1939. Before being married to Asha Bhonsle, he was married to a lady by the name of Rita. Asha Bhonsle and R.D. Burman had composed many a successful music compositions and were hailed as the perfect couple both on and off stage. Though R.D. Burman was born in Kolkata, his talent as a musician was recognized when he shifted to Mumbai. He is fondly known by a nickname, 'Pancham' among his contemporaries and as 'Pancham-da' among his juniors. Probably, it was Kishore Kumar, who had named him 'Pancham'.
Music Career of Rahul Dev Burman
Rahul Dev Burman had not only composed for Hindi films but for Bengali, Oriya, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and an Indo-Russian film as well. In his entire lifetime he had given the music direction for three thirty one movie songs and some other independent music ventures. There are four such non-movie music albums by R.D. Burman. Also, he had worked for soundtrack of some T.V. Serials and a documentary called, 'Maa ki Pukaar'. His style of music was versatile as he could compose romantic numbers as a well as hard rock music. Much of his music has not yet been released including the songs of certain films, which never saw the light of the day. His first directorial debut was made with Chhote Nawab. Awards Won by R. D. Burman
Though Rahul Dev Burman should be evaluated beyond awards and titles, his loyalists feel proud about the fact that he has won so many awards. Throughout the 1970s, his work was nominated for Filmfare awards but he had won the award thrice in his entire lifetime. The three award winning compositions included songs from the movies, 'Masoom' in 1983, 'Sanam Teri Kasam' and '1942, A Love Story'. For the music of the last film, he had also won the Screen Award.
