Mumbai Police


The Mumbai Police constitutes the chief executive branch in the city and this is the law enforcing body in Mumbai Metropolitan city and Greater Mumbai. The task of the Bombay Police Force has been classified and specialized so as to deal with different situations efficiently. The entire city of Mumbai has been divided into different police wards. The workers in the Police forces are allotted different designations and ranks, which represent their power and importance. Apart from looking into matters of breach of law, the police also work to help in matters of missing persons, traffic management and provision of security.

History of Mumbai Police

The Mumbai Police had its origin in Bhandari Militia, founded by the Gerald Aungier, the then governor of Mumbai. The body of the Bhandari Militia comprised of Subehdars from Sewree, Sion nd Mahim. The designations of the Police forces differed from the present times. Also, the Harbor police was different from the main police force. Both European and Indians were included in the Mumbai police force, though Indians were never promoted to the highest posts prior to Independence.

Duties of Mumbai Police

The chief tasks of the Bombay Police can be summed up as follows:
  • Looking after traffic orders on roads.
  • Providing special security to citizens.
  • Prevention and detection of all sorts of crimes, such as theft, material abuse, harassment, murders, rape, kidnapping.
  • Conducting encounters and controlling mobs during times of riots and crisis.
  • Writing complaints or FIRs on request of citizens.
  • Checking on different regions in Mumbai to ensure the maintenance of peace and keep crime at bay.
  • Keep records of missing persons, under-aged girls, who have eloped, registration of tourists of foreign nationality and the likes.
  • Prevention of eve teasing and other sorts of harassments to citizens.

The Ranking System in Mumbai Police Force

The top position of the Police force is occupied by the Commissioner of Police, followed by the Joint Commissioner of Police. He is followed by the additional commissioner of Police and the selection grade deputy commissioner of Police. Other ranks of lower grade in Mumbai police include Deputy Commissioner of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Police Inspector, Assistant Police Inspector, Police Sub-Inspector, Assistant Police Sub-Inspector, Head Constable, Police Naik and Police Constable.
