Mayor of Mumbai


The Mayor of Mumbai represents the functional head of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which includes the municipal corporation of Mumbai. The Mayor is elected to post by the city councilors after every five years.

The city councilors represent the wards of the Bombay city. However, the powers of the Mumbai mayor are but limited and he shares a huge responsibility with the Municipal Commissioners and the Additional Municipal Commissioners. There is also a post for deputy Mayor of Mumbai. The present deputy mayor of Mumbai is Ramesh Medhekar of BJP.

Candidates from the leading political parties in Mumbai stand for the elections. These parties include BJ, NCP, Shiv Sena, SP, RPI Athavale, Akhil Bhartiya Sena Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, and BSP. In the last elections for the post of Mumbai mayor, the voting was not done secret ballot.

The Present Mayor of Mumbai

The current mayor of Mumbai is Shubha Umesh Raul. She was voted to this post on the 1st of February, 2007 and his term to office is expected to end on the 2012. Mrs Raul is a doctor by profession and was a member of the Shiv Sena Party. She succeeded Datta Dalvi, who too was a Shiv Sena candidate. Shubha Raul won by seven votes against Sheetal Mhatre, a candidate of Congress. This time around, the election was special because the candidates had to be women from backward class.

Former Mayors of Mumbai

Datta Dalvi, who served the Municipal Corporation Mumbai before Raul, was voted to post in 2002. In 1997, Chandu Rane became the mayor of Bombay. Milind Vidya too was the mayor for a short period of time from 1996 to 1997. Other prominent mayors of Mumbai include R.T. Kadam and K. F. Nairman.
