Marathi Cinema


Marathi cinema has developed as one of the regional film industries in India. Marathi cinemas in the initial years have flourished to a great extent under Prabhat Film Company. Marathi films are still very popular among the local people of Mumbai.

Maharashtra not only promotes regional Marathi cinema but it is one of the locations where film industry of India has developed. The Marathi films got momentum in its early phase, under some reputed directors like Master Vinayak, V. Shantaram, Fatehlal, Raja Paranjpe, P.L. Deshpande, Damle, G.D. Madgulkar and Sudhir Phadke.

Marathi cinema in the later years flourished under directors like Raj Dutt, Dada Kondke, Datta Dharmadhikari and Mahesh Kothare. The themes of the films in Marathi sometimes are based upon social issues, sometimes on traditional art forms and sometimes on humor. The Marathi cinemas are generally made in the format of 16 mm. But Shwaas was presented in a format of 25 mm and it brought much success to the film. Recently new technologies are adopted in the industry for making Marathi films. The films are made very musical with melodious songs.
