Asrar ul Hasan Khan, better known as Majrooh Sultanpuri was born in 1919 in Sultanpur of Uttar Pradesh in India. He was an eminent poet of his times. He earned fame as a lyricist of Hindi film songs in Bollywood. He used very lucid Hindi for his poetry and also became popular for his Urdu poetry.
Majrooh Sultanpuri studied Persian, Urdu and Arabic. Then he studied medicine and continued practicing as a hakim. Later he took up the profession of a poet and was inspired by Jigar Moradabadi. Majrooh Sultanpuri's first lyrics for Hindi film were "Gam diye mushtaqil....." in 1945. K.L. Saigal has sung this song for the film Shahjehan.
Majrooh Sultanpuri has worked as a lyricist in a number of Hindi films. He teamed with some of the best music directors of Hindi films like O.P. Nayar, Madan Mohan, Naushad, S.D. Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal and R.D. Burman. Some of popular films in which Majrooh Sultanpuri worked are

Awards Received by Majrooh Sultanpuri:
One of the most prestigious awards won by Majrooh Sultanpuri is the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994. Among the lyricists of Hindi films, he was the first to receive this award. The government of Madhya Pradesh has honored him with the Iqbal Samman in 1993 and with Sant Gyaneshwar Puraskar.
He also received an award for his 'Ghazal', an anthology of his poems written in Urdu. He won the Filmfare Award for being the Best Lyricist in 1965 for the film Dosti released in 1964. Majrooh Sultanpuri died on 25th May in 2000 in Mumbai.
