J.R.D. Tata was an eminent Mumbaikar and business, who had headed the Tata & Sons Company for fifty years, taking Indian business to a new height and definition. His full name is Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata. He was a trained pilot, in fact the first ever Indian to get the license of flying. His early experience in flying geared him up with many a practical knowledge about airlines. This eventually helped him in the establishment of Tata Airlines. He was awarded the United Nations Population Awards and the Bharat Ratna Award (1991). He breathed his last on the 29th of November, 1993.

J.R.D. Tata was born on the 29th of July, 1904 to Ratan Tata and Soni, his French wife. The Tata company was founded by Jamshedji Tata, the grandfather of JRD Tata. Jamshedji Tata was called the father of the Indian industry and it is not a big surprise that JRD Tata lived up to the expectation of his family reputation.

Though he was born and brought up abroad, JRD Tata returned to India to become a part of the family business. He was known among his family and friends as 'Jeh'.
Business Career of J.R.D. Tata
JRD Tata returned to India at the age of eighteen and soon afterwards joined the business than headed by his father. Ratanji Tata passed away at in 1926 and on his occasion, JRD Tata was announced as director of the Board of their company, the Tata Sons limited. Twelve years later, in 1938 he became the Chairman of Tata Sons Limited. In 1932, the Tata Airlines was opened which later became the Indian Airlines. TELCO, the most important of all locomotive manufacturing company in India was founded by JRD Tata in 1945. Other significant milestones in his career includes establishment of the Family Planning Foundation in 1971 and some very important works in the field of science, technology , management and tourism business.
