IIT, Mumbai was set up in India by a recommendation made by a committee under government of India in 1946. Initiative to set up this reputed educational institute of India started in 1957 and classes were held from the following year with 100 students. In 2000, Professor Ashok Misra has been appointed as the Director of IIT, Mumbai.
IIT, Mumbai is located at Powai and it occupies an area of about 200 hectares. The surrounding ambiance of the the campus is beautiful. This university has been set up with the aid of USSR Government. UNESCO also helped this institute. IIT in Mumbai has been recognized as a university by a Parliamentary act and henceforth it can offer diplomas and degrees to its students.
