The Mumbai High Court happens to be one of the oldest high courts in India along with high courts of Kolkata and Delhi. This is a chartered organization that is in charge of the juridical administration of Mumbai. However, it is not Mumbai alone, which is comes under the Mumbai high court but the court maintains benches in Goa, Aurangabad and Nagpur. It deals with both criminal and civil appeals. The court members comprise the sixty four judges and they function under the chief justice of Mumbai High Court.
History of Mumbai High Court
The official permission for the commencement of the Charter High Court of Bombay was passed on the 26th of June, 1862. The High Court Act was issued a year earlier in 1861 by the Queen of England. The aim was the establishment of high courts in Bombay, Calcutta and Delhi. Significantly, the Mumbai High Court was established after the establishment of the Supreme Court of India.
The Chief Justices of Mumbai High
The first Judge of the Mumbai High Court was Sir Mathew Richard Sausse from the year 1862 to 1866. During the period of British Rule in India, the High Court of Bombay was presided over by Judges from Great Britain. The last English judge of the Bombay High Court was Sir Leonard Stone who stepped down a year after the independence in 1948. He was succeeded by Chief Justice Mr. M.C. Chagla.

The building complex of the Mumbai High Court is located within the former Fort of Mumbai, which is located close to the Mumbai University and the Oval Maidan.
