Gulzar


Gulzar was born on August 18, 1934 in Jhelum District of Deena. He is a famous Indian lyricist, writer and Director. His real name is Sampooran Singh Kalra. This highly talented personality started his film career as Bimal Roy's assistant. Besides this, he was also inspired by Hrishikesh Mukherjee during the beginning of his film career. He wrote songs for the films Bandini. Mora Gora Ang Layee Le is said to be his first written film song.

Added to this, he also wrote songs for Kabuli Wala, Biwi aur Makan, Sannata and Khamoshi, Basera, Thodi si Bewafaai, Maya Memsaab, Satya and many others. Gulzar also worked with renowned Music Director R.D. Burman. Thereafter Gulzar showed his brilliance in the script writing and story writing. On the other hand, in the year 1971 he directed the film Mere Apne. He wrote stories for almost 60 movies, whereas, given direction to 17 films. Among them Aandhi, Namkeen, Parichay, Koshish, Mausam are some of the most popular ones.

During the span of 1987 to 1996, he involved himself in doing a serial named Mirza Ghalib. Till now this serial is popular for its dialog, direction and music. In 1996, he directed Maachis. This film acquired huge popularity.

Gulzar also worked with many other new music Directors, such as Anu Malik, AR Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Jatin Lalit. He also get immense fame for Dil Se's music direction. For this he received Filmfare award. In 2006, he was honored with Best Lyricist award. Thereafter he wrote lyrics for Baat Pakki, Omkara, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Guru and Jaaneman.

Currently he also worked in a television serial named
Tehrir... Munshi Premchand ki. Though Gulzar worked in a number of films, his personal favorite is always writing poetries. In the year 1962, his first poem collection was published. Its name was Ek Boond Chaand, whereas, recently, in his poetry book, Triveni, "Roopa - Harper Collins" is published. His poem collection "Raat, Chaand aur Mein" is also published recently.

Moreover, recently, in Pakistan Raat Pashmine ki, his another poetry collection has been published. On the other hand, his other song collections include Beedi, Chhaiyya Chhaiyya, Kajra Re and Mera Kuchh Samaan.

Presently, Rajkamal Prakashan is collecting film scripts of Gulzar. Name of this compiled series is Manjarnaama. Added to this, many of the modern artists are working with Gulzar. Salim Arif has directed a play named Kharaashein. Its theme is based on short stories of Gulzar. He also wrote several books for children and in 1989 was honored by the National Council for Education Research and Training.

His daughter Meghna Gulzar has also wrote a book on his father's life profile, name of it is "Because He Is...". Gulzar also wrote a theme song (Lau se lau jalti rahe) for the Olympic Torch Relay Race. In 2010 Commonwealth Games will be taking place in New Delhi. For this event also he wrote a song, "Chal dilli chalein chalna hai".

Gulzar was honored with 18 Filmfare Awards and 5 National Awards. In 2002, he got Life Time Achievement Award, whereas, in 2003 he received Sahitya Academy Award. This is given for his marvelous short stories collection, Dhuaan. Apart from this, he was also honored with Padmabhushan.

His wife is Rakhee, a former Hindi film actress.
